When a senior is dealing with Alzheimer’s or dementia, they often require attentive, expert care, along with an environment that’s safe and secure. This guide will help you learn more about memory care, what Copeland Oaks memory care community is like, and the specialized training health care professionals have at Copeland Oaks.

The Importance of Knowledgeable Care Staff

Patients in memory care have different needs from others in long-term care. In the best facilities, caregivers are specifically trained to meet the unique needs of those with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Our team provides expert care in an environment that has added safety features and supportive staff available around the clock.

Memory Care Requirements at Copeland Oaks

Copeland Oaks must meet certain requirements to be accredited as a memory care facility.

To provide care for residents with memory impairment, our staff must have the proper qualifications, training, and education. They must be able to understand the specialized needs of individuals with dementia and Alzheimer’s and possess the skills necessary to respond and care for them, whether full-time or as-needed.

To be certified, our facilities must also offer activity programming for individuals with memory impairment that match the resident’s cognitive ability, reasoning ability, physical function, and more.

Copeland Oaks offers a wide variety of activities, all designed to help:

  • Stir memories
  • Facilitate life-review
  • Encourage self-expression
  • Foster emotional connections with others
  • Lessen any anxiety and irritability that Alzheimer’s may bring
  • Get seniors with Alzheimer’s more social

Certified Memory Care Options at Copeland Oaks

Copeland Oaks offers options from our 250-acre campus for those in both the early and advanced stages of dementia or Alzheimer’s.

Early Stage Memory Care

Our Donald R. James Assisted Living Memory Care Wing is located in the Assisted Living apartment complex. Ideal for individuals in the early stages of dementia or Alzheimer’s, residents can choose from studio and one-bedroom suites where they can live independently or with a spouse and receive as-needed skilled nursing care.

Advanced Memory Care

For those in the later stages of dementia or Alzheimer’s, we also offer full-time long-term care in our Crandall Medical Center. At Crandall, rates include a private room with an accessible bathroom, 24/7 nursing staff, added safety features, and more in a secure environment. Since this facility is also located on our campus, it makes the move easier for individuals who progress to move into our memory care apartments with full-time services and monitoring.

Training & Certifications for Memory Care Staff

The staff at Copeland Oaks who are focused on memory care are Certified Dementia Care Practitioners (CDPs). This certification means that the staff and health care professionals have received comprehensive knowledge in the area of dementia care and meets the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (NCCDP) requirements for CDP certification. Beyond achieving certification, CDPs commit to ongoing professional development and recertification every two years.
