Being a senior doesn’t have to mean sitting in a rocking chair. Your retirement years can be a time for fun, adventure, and spending quality time with friends and family. Need some ideas for different senior activities you or your loved ones can enjoy with friends, family, or other residents in the retirement community—other than bingo? You’ve come to the right place!

Trivia

Trivia can be a fun competition for all ages. Many local restaurants and businesses offer trivia nights, and there are also a variety of trivia board games that can offer a small group at home the same experience. Choose from everything from trivia for seniors to trivia about a decade, like 50s or 60s trivia games! These games are a fun way to take you back in time while getting the gears in your brain turning.

Education

Retirement doesn’t mean you have to stop learning. Consider stopping by your local university or community college to see if they have special classes for seniors or any different lectures you’re interested in. Is there a hobby you’ve always wanted to try, a skill you’ve wanted to learn, or a certain subject you’ve always wanted to explore? Do a bit of research and see if there are any nearby classes you can enroll in. This could be a great opportunity to meet new people and get out into the community, while doing something you enjoy!

Additionally, Alliance, Ohio, a city just ten minutes west of Copeland Oaks, is home to the University of Mount Union. Residents at Copeland can attend a variety of sports and cultural events, as well as attend classes free of charge!

Community Activities

Getting involved in the community is a great way to add more socialization to your routine. There are likely a variety of community groups that you could get involved in to help your community. Look into church programs, nonprofits, and more. Volunteering at a food bank, putting together packages for the military, and similar opportunities, are great ways to give back to your local community. Seniors can also look to group activities and events within their own retirement community—from Bible study groups to outdoor concerts and more. Copeland Oaks in Sebring, Ohio features over 60 enrichment activities for seniors on our campus alone!

Video & Online Games

There are a lot of easy-to-learn video games that you can play alone or with others. Don’t worry about the learning curve—many of these games are designed to be fun for the whole family. The Nintendo Wii offers WiiSports, a motion sensor-based game that allows you to play baseball, bowling, tennis, and more from the comfort of your living room. Similar games exist for the Nintendo Switch. If your grandchild or another family member is an avid player of these types of games, playing with them can be a great opportunity for bonding!
