Book and Bake Sale

Friday, May 18th kicked off the Copeland Oaks bi-annual book and bake sale. The book sale, an integral fundraiser for the library, has been going on since 1992 when resident volunteers saw a need to financially support the library. That first year the sale only brought in $200 and did not seem to be sufficiently rewarding compared to all of the hard work put into the sale. After almost dissolving following that first year, the next year’s sale brought in around $1,000 and has been thriving ever since!  In 1996, resident Ruth Sheffield, brought the idea of adding a bake sale to the mix. Copeland residents donate their baked goods to be sold during the 3-day book sale.

In 2010, resident volunteers found the book sale to be too much work and considered no longer doing it until staff volunteers stepped up to the plate. Valerie Brown, a Crandall employee, has been heading up the book and bake sale along with help from other staff and resident volunteers.

“Valerie has personally been sorting books and organizing the sale since 2010 and she does a phenomenal job,” said Jean Smith, resident and longtime librarian and volunteer at our Copeland Library.

Jean explained that like most things here at Copeland Oaks, the library along with the book and bake sale are successful due to the group effort of resident and staff volunteers.

The first day of the book sale was exclusively for residents and staff to get first pick at baked goods, books, DVDs and CDs. On Saturday, the sale opened up for the public to come in and shop. Copeland Oaks resident and writer, Mary Lu Warstler, conducted a book signing during the event.

All proceeds of the sale go directly to the Copeland Library. This bi-annual sale is the Library’s main source for operating income.

Copeland Oaks 2018 Summer Concert Series

All concerts are free and open to the public and begin at 7pm. Concerts take place in Murphy Auditorium located on the beautiful campus of Copeland Oaks Retirement Community. Come early and grab dinner in our Lakeview Terrace before you head over to the concert!

Irma Cheers Us On!

The longtime coach’s wife is the biggest team supporter you’ll ever meet – and we’re proud she’s now on Team Copeland Oaks!

• Volunteers with “Crandall Friends” – a group that visits Crandall residents
• Secretary for the Crandall Residents Council
• Volunteers with the Vesper Ushers
• Mother of three sons – all coaches
• Collects beautiful ornamental Christmas angels – over 100 & counting!

Why Copeland Oaks?

Irma Hood moved into her Copeland Oaks Villa in 2012.  She loves to cheer on her nearby grandchildren at their games – and she’s got a lot of pep!

Irma was never a cheerleader in high school, but she sure made up for it. Her late husband, Wally, was a high school and college football coach. Irma missed only 8 games in 44 years!

“Being positive and encouraging a good attitude was important,” she says, recalling many players whose only encouragement in life came from their coach, teammates, fans and…Irma, the coach’s wife.

It’s a motto she still lives by as she frequently visits Crandall residents who need support and friendly company.

The Hood family moved 22 times. She knows how it feels to be new in town. That’s one reason why she goes out of her way to make Copeland residents new and old feel they are at home and an important part of the community.
