A Message from Dave Mannion, CEO

Crandall Medical Center Exceeds Standards with Caring, Long-Term Staff

One of the benefits of which the Copeland Oaks Retirement Community and Crandall Medical Center are most proud is our clinical staff; in particular, the longevity of our nurses and nursing assistants. These dedicated workers are a great asset to our residents and to Copeland Oaks as a whole.

The number of years that clinical staff members have dedicated to their jobs at Copeland Oaks and Crandall Medical Center is virtually unheard of in the senior care and skilled nursing industry.

The average number of years that the 25 Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) working at the Copeland Health Clinic or on the assisted living nursing units is 9.5. Of the 44 State Tested Nursing Assistants (STNAs) providing care to assisted living residents, 19 have worked at Copeland Oaks over 5 years.

The two Registered Nurses (RNs) who manage the two nursing units at Crandall Medical Center have a combined longevity of 41 years. Half of Crandall’s LPN staff have over 15 years of experience practicing at the medical center. Twenty-two of the STNAs have been giving bedside care to Crandall residents for over 10 years with six of them dedicated to Crandall for over 20 years.

We are keenly aware of the value of the strong knowledge base of our long-term employees which plays a vital part in enabling Copeland Oaks and Crandall Medical Center to meet and exceed the standards of care. Long term staff members pass down their skills to new employees and are most likely to know how to overcome problems or issues as they arise. Employees with experience and longevity add stability to the workforce, building confidence and morale.

For many of our clinical colleagues, a job has turned into a career as nursing assistants have completed programs to become LPNs and RNs bringing new skills to the Copeland and Crandall communities.

We are planning events for May to honor our clinical staff during both National Nursing Home Week and National Nurses’ Week. We look forward to the opportunity to celebrate the dedication, perseverance and patience that our caregiving staff have lavished on us!

Meet Paulette Roades, The Calligrapher

Paulette Roades taught chemistry, physics, trigonometry and math for more than 30 years at the Springfield and Poland school districts. She helps to make Copeland Oaks a great community by sharing her love of:

  • art
  • calligraphy
  • poetry writing
  • bookbinding
  • and so much more!

Why Copeland Oaks?

In 1989, Paulette and her late husband, Jack, moved from their 80-acre home near Lisbon to Copeland Oaks. They wanted to be near Paulette’s mother, who resided at Crandall Medical Center after suffering a stroke.

She came to us with great hobbies and interests – and has continued to cultivate more all the time. Paulette has authored several books of poetry and favorite quotes, always written in calligraphy.

Her calligraphy has graced many items throughout Copeland from name tags for events to unique Christmas messages for all of Copeland’s 500 employees.

After attending a book binding seminar, Paulette volunteered to repair books at the Copeland Oaks Library. She has taught classes in calligraphy, zentangle and other art forms at the Copeland Creativity Center.

“I could never possibly be bored here,” says Paulette from her villa studio. “Living at Copeland Oaks has given me the gift of time….time to do what I love.”

Meet José Carrion, Crandall Medical Center STNA

Congratulations to José Carrion, named Copeland Oaks/Crandall Medical Center Employee of the Month for March. José was awarded a plaque, certificate of appreciation and a gift card by Dave Mannion, Copeland Oaks CEO.

In making the presentation, Mr. Mannion said, “We appreciate José’s sincere concern for the residents of Crandall Medical Center and his strong dedication to providing the best possible care each day. He has earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues who nominated him for the honor.”

In recommending José for the award, three of his co-workers cited ‘his positive attitude.’

“He always has a smile on his face and steps in to help residents, family members and other staff without reservation,” one colleague said. Another noted that José has received accolades from family members for his care of their loved ones.

An STNA, José has worked at Crandall Medical Center for the past 6 months, although he has been providing bedside care for almost 20 years. Prior to joining the CMC team, José worked at Salem Regional Medical Center Alliance Community Hospital as a Patient Care Assistant (PCA) and at Community Care in Alliance.

As a young man, José remembered being laid off from a factory job and working at a gas station to make ends meet. “I talked with a customer at the station who was a nursing assistant and decided that position would provide the job security I needed as there would always to sick people to care for,” he said. “Six months after I started working as a nursing assistant, I knew it was the perfect job for me. I truly love what I am doing and can’t see me doing anything else.”
